Well I took the plunge and did the upgrade via smxi.
What a mess!
As expected it removed kdebase-bin-kde3 but also said it
wasn't going to install kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4!
It also complained about the kword download (can't
remember exactly what it said). And it complained that
starting dhcpd3 failed.
A quick check showed that kword had been installed OK and
likewise kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4. But....
kconsole had a transparent background and couldn't be changed
via kcontrol. Also offset on the screen so that the scroll bars
couldn't be used. And no title bar so the window couldn't be
moved. In fact all konqueror windows were the same.
I re-installed the graphic driver to no avail.
As a last resort I re-installed kdebase-bin-kde3 which removed
kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 and ktorrent amongst others. This
appears to have affected a cure.
Everything now seems back to normal. But heaven knows what's
going to happen with tomorrow's du! |

| ditto...no problems here. I let the new ktorrent install. No errors noted with kde with the kdebase-bin-kde3 package removal... |

I let it all dist-upgrade. Got no errors, but sidux has gotten slower and slower.
Haven't found out why,
but currently running the brown box partition,
and waiting to see what dist-upgrade will bring each day.
I mean really slow, like watching the screen paint slow.
Reminds me of the bad old days. |

I also updated at last, but I have problems
I cannot change background in kde i.e. I can change it but in kde it always shows the black screen as background. |

Yep KDE is really screwed after the upgrade.
On reboot my 4 desktops have been reduced to 1.
Missing title bar on window therefore can't move window.
No scroll bars on window. There are probably other issues
but these are the most obvious.
Luckily I've been tinkering with compiz-fusion so I
started compiz moved the cube and the window bits returned.
When I dropped out of compiz everything in kde returned to
normal ie. 4 desktops and window decorations restored.
But a reboot brought the problems back.
I completely purged the kde4 stuff to see if that would
effect a cure but it didn't. A reboot merely brought the
problems back again.
In times past kde config problems could be resolved by
removing files like /.kde/socket and /.DCOPserver from
/var/tmp and letting KDE restore then when it starts up.
But times have changes and these files no longer exist.
Does anyone know what one does now to force KDE to
reconfigure itself? |

I don't get it - is the kdebase-bin-kde3 package removal intended and ok or does it cause problems?
Second thing: as someone else stated above, my 2D graphics have become slow as well over the last days/weeks |

My solution (basically removing the kde4 stuff).
Re-installed kdebase-bin-kde3 which removed kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4.
Also removed any other kde4 stuff (not many files).
Stopped X and deleted /.kde. Re-started X which allowed kde to create
a new /.kde. Re-configured kde to my liking using kcontrol. a bit drastic
but it worked and now everything is back to normal.
Econaut: After the kde4 du kde did seem a little sluggish but after the above it seems OK. It all subjective.
I really don't know what this kde stuff is doing in the repositiories. These packages are clearly not meant to function alongside each other as they are mutually exclusive (eg. installing kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 removes kdebase-bin-kde3 and visa-versa). The configuration
schemes are different so installing the kde4 packages ruins the present kde configuration and kcontrol cannot be used to reconfigure.
I suspect a few more transitional kde4 package need to enter the repositories before kde4 can cleanly start to replace kde3. |

I lost kdebase-bin-kde3 the first time kde4 stuff came into sid (about 2 months ago) and I've had no issues or slowing down. Not sure why some people let kdebase-bin-kde3 go with no problems whilst others do.

I did several dist-upgrades here the last week, the last one right now, and everything seems to be fine. (including the kdebase-bin-kde3 removal and ktorrent kde4 upgrade).
Perhaps I do not have any problems, because all packages that I need for compiling KDE4 from svn are installed, as I had tried around with this. So those who have problems, might try to install some of the packages mentioned here:
http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started ... and_Debian
But I do not have an idea if this will help or not. |

oops that didn't work.
Strange though that the config of KDE survived a controlled
reboot yesterday but didn't survive a cold boot this morning.
Well no I have work to do so will have to wait until this evening. |

| The solution was quite simple The session manager was set to restore the previous session. So kcontrol->KDE Components->Session Manager->and set Restore manually saved session. |
