Hey,
i would like to place an idea here.
Would it be possible to make something like a notifier to remind you of doing a d-u?
Or just count the days which passed by since the last d-u?
Would be great if you could get some hint, so that users don't forget to do a d-u. |

What for...?
Debian uploads new packages twice a day, so distupgrading is "always" an option. |

But if you are not into sidux that much. It would be great if you get a hint if a d-u is necessary.
I thought about the possibility to install sidux to a machine of an average user who doesn't care much about all the administration stuff.
Then it would be helpful if he get an advice to do an d-u.
Don't know if it is possible, but i think it would be more user-friendly even for not very experienced users.
Perhaps that is not the goal of sidux but i just want to let you know about my thoughts.

I think what you are seeing is that some other distros do exactly what you are saying in-between their main releases to keep you up to date on new developments WITHIN their distro. With sidux this is obsolete as you never have to reinstall, but can just keep dist-upgrading indefinately. sidux is a rolling release distro that has all the latest packages for debian sid. To do what you are asking would mean that you get a reminder every day!
Anyway, depending on what you are doing with your system you may upgrade as frequently or infrequently as you like. Realistically, you could set up a calendar program or a "wmlet" and set it to show when to dist-upgrade at whatever interval you like. Once a month? every two weeks? every week? every day? If you could care less about the latest and greatest and just want to use your computer, then once a month is probably sufficient. I rarely go past a week or two but I am also constantly messing with my system. Hell, my ex doesnt upgrade unless I remind her . . . about once a month. |
