| Instead of installing sidux's grub to my boot mbr, I just added the entry from sidux's menu.lst to my existing menu.lst I've done this before with other distros with no problems and even with earlier versions of sidux. This time however, when I select sidux from the grub menu it says it can't boot. It gives me an "Error 2: Bad file or directory". |

| While the error message itself suggests a misconfiguration in your menu.lst, be aware that yopu cannot boot sidux from an "old" ( := as installed by sidux < 2008-01 Νυξ or any mainstream distribution released before march 2008, I'd be particularly careful with smaller distributions in this regard, as those might not have fixed the issue in their grub versions yet) grub MBR (the installed MBR, not the currently present grub package), for further nformation please read the release notes for sidux 2008-01 Νυξ. |

| You can also opt to use ReiserFS instead of Ext3 to format the partition that you want to use for sidux. |

why do you keep recommending reiserfs?
it has been mostly unmaintained for too long now.
and it does not look as that was gonna change.

It's the only alternate fs available in the installer if he wishes to use an existing menu.lst to boot sidux. I think there are troubles with using sidux to boot other operating systems also. This will happen until everyone is using this latest version using 256byte inode.
Understand it is only a hack or stopgap solution. I could wish for another choice also. For the same reasons you state....... But it works. sidux is just at the front of the curve on this is all.
As an aside:
Evidently sidux doesn't check partitions when booting either. I admit that I don't think that is a feature that was chosen. On multiboot systems it can cause problems when a partition is reused.
I'd also like to know if sidux changing time stamps on other partitions (even with operating systems in them) can be stopped.
I can get around the first but the second is beyond me being able to fix.
As you can tell I'm a newbie. Though I first tried sidux during the first few months that it was available and I've always managed to find the info I needed for it. I've been away for too long due to non-linux things happening. At least I can say that I haven't had Windows on my disks for more than 4 years.
I haven't given sidux disk space for a little while and when I checked recently I was immensely happy. This is a superb distribution. Expecially considering it's based on Sid.
Thanks for any help received. |
