vmware: ../../src/xcb_lock.c:77: _XGetXCBBuffer: assertion  `((int) ((xcb_req) - (dpy->request)) >= 0)' failed

vmware is version 1.0.6 , kernel 2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.4-sidux-686 , Nvidia with latest drivers ( by smxi)

I googled a bit , similar errors here and here
but gtk2-engines-nodoka was useless to me.

it seems a libX11-6 problem ( v. 2.1.1.4-2 ustable is installed )

I posted my "warning" here and not into the "Upgrade Warnings forum" 'cos I'm NOT so sure the fails is strictly due to the du, as I were not running vmware since a while.

But I got this error _just_ after my last dist upgrade

try the vmware 2.02 player install + any any in smxi / svmi, 1.x is out of date and old.

Install to current latest kernel to avoid issues and to get your system up to date.

I have no issues with vmware player, can't say for workstation or server since I don't run them.

I am having the same problem. I don't think it is a problem with Vmware Server, but rather the console. I saw the post that mentioned gtk2-nodoka and agree that this is not the problem in Debian.

I also was thinking it was libX11-6 that was causing the problem and I thought about installing the version from testing or stable to see if that worked, but I have decided to wait for the moment.

I have been using both VMware Server and VirtualBox for a while now. I prefer VMWare but admit that VirtualBox has improved. Since support seems to be better for VBox, I am considering uninstalling VMWare. I mostly use a virtual WinXP machine for the rare occasion when I need access to a windows machine. I was surprised the other night when I went to use it and found the console error above. This may push me to VBox if a solution is not forthcoming. I am installing XP in VBox right now.

updated the kernel to the latest 2.6.25-6.slh.3-sidux-686

the player works well, but ther vmware server is still "broken" Sad

@grg3: any success downgrading libx11-6 ?

can't use virtualbox or the vmplayer cos I need to connect to a remote vm, and as far as i know a remote connection could be done just with the vmware-server application

Well, I decided to try downgrading libx11-6 and libx11-6-data and it appears those packages are the culprit! The console works again and I can now access the server and my virtual machines.

(edit) I used testing.

greath news!

Now I'm running the testing version here as well and vmware is back Very Happy

did you downgraded it to the testing ( 2:1.0.3.7 ) or to the unstable previous one ( 2:1.1.4-1) ?

@h2: maybe you should pin libx11-6 in smxi

Since this is only a vmware server issue, not even player, it won't get handled by smxi automatically.

However, you can create your own hold/install option manually in smxi:

In /etc/smxi.conf
add this line to for example pin libx11-6:
hold-install=libx11-6^libx11-6-data

The ^ is the separator between packages, do not use spaces.

However, make sure you remember you have these held, and remove them as soon as it's safe.

Once you have your vmware running again, make sure to hold these packages, either manually or using the above method, otherwise in a week or two the testing packages will no longer be available.

Thanks for the info! That will come in handy!

I filed a bug report (Bug#486507) to let the package maintainers know that the changes in new verison caused problems for this application. Hopefully, VMware will come up with fix.

Added /etc/smxi.conf

hold-install=libx11-6^libx11-data

That should give me working vmware-server-console for awhile.
