I was just looking at that drive at newegg. It is nice to know that SATA optical drives now work well with Linux. I will retire the faithful NEC-3500.

Nice to know you found the issue...why not file a bug report regarding the Marvell IDE controller? Perhaps the kernel devs can come up with a fix to allow you to use your trusty old NEC drive again.

or the new
LG Electronics GH22NP20 (29¤, Germany, poor avaibility)

I would go with the first one.
