Post subject: 2.6.25 kernel troubles (IDE Optical Drive Detection)  PostPosted: Jun 08, 2008 - 09:07 PM

I keep upgrading my kernel to the latest kernel, but I always end up going back to the last 2.6.24 kernel (2.6.24-2.6.24.4.slh.7). My problem is the detection of my NEC 3500 DVD/CD Writer. I notice the CD drive is not found in vmware, vbox or k3b.

Once I go back to the 2.6.24 kernel all is well. Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks! Rick Confused

Does "rm /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-cd.rules" (yes, really deleting, don't rename!) and rebooting help?

I will upgrade again and try that out! I'll let you know what happens.

Please remove the file while running kernel 2.6.25 and boot into 2.6.25 again for that test.

(I expect the udev rules getting confused, while switching between blkdev to libata enumeration in newer kernels - and pretty much suspect that the mainboard in question sports a VIA (or ALi) chipset).

I upgraded again and tried the above suggestion. It did not work. My optical drive is still not detected.

The system in question is an Intel P35 chipset.

Back to 2.6.24!

did you delete the rule as slh noted above while still in 2.6.25 kernel?

Yes, upgraded to 2.6.25 again, removed rule, and rebooted. Still no optical drive detected.

You might check to see if any other people have reported issues with the optical drive you have. Have you searched google?

I have had this drive forever and I have been running linux on it for years. I would really be surprised if 2.6.25 does not support it. I tried searching google for optical drives not detected after kernel upgrade but didn't find much. Most optical drive problems seem to permission issues. The interesting part about this problem is that it appears that the drive is not detected. I searched high and low in /dev thinking that it might have been detected with a different name, but I could not find anything that looked like it is a cd drive.

I may throw another hard drive in there and install sidux 2-2008 just to see what happens. 2-2008 uses the same 2.6.25 kernel.

thought you meant optical drive, not a hard drive

I do. I am curious to see if a clean install works where an upgrade doesn't. I would prefer to not wipe out my current system to find out!

I remembered that I don't have another SATA hard drive to try a fresh 2..6.25 install, so I tried swapping the DVD Writer instead. I then upgraded to the latest 2.6.25 kernel and still have no optical drive!

I am stumped now!

I just remembered that I still have a PCI IDE controller. I just installed it and connected the NEC drive and it is detected! Evidently, the 2.625 kernel has problems with the IDE controller on my Intel P35 board!

Further research shows that this interface is a Marvell 88SE6111 IDE interface that is used on some MSI and ASUS boards (Mine is MSI) A Google of the topic seems to indicate that there has been some regression in 2.6.25 with this interface. I don't know if this in in the kernel or a kernel module.

This may be a good time to consider upgrading to a SATA DVD Writer. Anybody have any recommendations regarding SATA optical drives?

I use a sata LITE-ON - LH-20A1S cost me $29.00 at newegg, I have had many plextors in the past (imho junk in todays world and overpriced), I highly recommend Lite-On.
