Post subject: Urban Teror problems on desktop, but fine on laptop  PostPosted: Jun 06, 2008 - 05:44 AM

Urban Terror: http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php similar to Counter Strike but uses the Quake 3 Engine. The download includes the free quake engine so you dont have to own Q3 to play.

I have played it on my main computer for some time, with Debian etch upgraded to sid for the last few years (last updated kernel 2.6.15), but after installing sidux I have problems. Right after I get killed the game seems to lose sync with the server. This does not happen on my laptop with sidux. On the laptop I am using the 2.6.24 kernel with a ATI card, and on the desktop I have an Nvidia and a 2.6.25.

i have been playing ut on sidux chaos, sidux eros and sidux nyx. Never had any trouble like that. I have had a gforce 5200 and a gforce 7600 graphics card, always running the last kernel slh cooked together.

Maybe I will reinstall. It still is happening to me. I thought maybe it was the via velocity onboard NIC but I put in a additional NIC and that didnt help. I can rule out the internet connection (router, cable modem) because I am using the same one for the laptop and the desktop.

Are you using the latest Nvidia driver or the Sid-Nvidia Driver? I use the latest Nvidia with each new kernel update.

I use the latest nvidia driver. Regarding installation; i didn't install ut, just unpack the .zip-file somewhere and run ioUrbanTerror.i386. Make a link to that file if you want.

Well I am noticing a interesting behavior that MAY have something to do with my problem: My computer's clock is gaining time. During the last 5 hours I have gained about 15 minutes. Before sidux I didnt have this problem, but then again, I was using an old kernel for a long time: 2.6.15

OK. I am trying passing clock stuff to the kernel.
notsc makes it work much better, its playable, but not perfect. I am on to something.

I wonder if this is a bug. MSI KT880 Delta (Via based chipset) motherboard, Athlon (k7) 3200+, 400FSB, Nvidia Geforce 6600gt

If anyone has good ideas to maintain a smooth clock, let me know. The last kernel I was using that worked fine (for years) was 2.6.15-586tsc

I have been upgrading my kernels and the problem has pretty much gone away! In addition the frames rates have gone up! I added Steam using Wine-doors and then downloaded counter strike through steam and its all been flawless. I feel like the lone gamer, but yes I do use linux for more then that. Manage and create websites, photo design, and do GIS work. Excellent Distro!
