| I'm totally new to advanced linux. The only linux I've ever worked with was PCLinuxOS, and I barely even touched that. I've jumped into an ocean and don't know where to go. RIght now I'm trying to download and install firefox, but I can't figure out what to execute. I'm used to windows where you just get a single executable file and you run that. What would I do to get firefox running? |

Why u ask the same question in two threads? I told you, u don't need to download firefox, just apt-get install iceweasel.
BTW, U should read the sidux-manual. |

go to the menu, click "internet", click "iceweasel".
then firefox will start. it's called iceweasel in debian (or sidux for that matter) because of trademark issues.
i386/amd64: if you are new to linux, take i386. |

If you are new, use the i386 version. Else you may have to work for Flash.
But if you use Linux, you will have to know about the terminal. At least a little. |

This is a myth - flash has been working under 64 bit for >6 months. There is no extra work to get it going than the 32 bit version (ie it's an apt-get away)
I currently use 64 bit desktop at work and home, and the only major missing desktop feature vs the 32 bit now is the sun java browser plugin.
@ brawnyman713: if you need to use more than ~3GB ram then go 64 bit. If not, 32 bit is fine (but if curiousity gets the better of you...go 64 ) |

As cleary already made clear: Almost everything in Debian Sid/sidux (over 20.000 packages) is available in amd_64 as it is in i386. Additionally, most non-free applications and drivers are, too. sidux64 performs great, is stable, complete and 100% Debian Sid.
Common requested stuff still not working/working with problems:
1) Sun Java-Plugin
While sun-java installs and works fine, the browser-plugin for Iceweasel is not available. There are 2 possible temporary workarounds. Either use Konqueror instead, which enables you to define and use Java by linking into the jre, or use Icedtea from my repository at http://maledivenhilfe.com/debian/. Hopefully the new open source based OpenJDK will make it into Debian shortly, which will finally solve the issue.
2) Open Source from outside Debian
If sources are available, those can easily be re-packaged for 64bit - ask for help here, or in IRC if needed. If the package is interesting for more sidux users I will put them up in my repository.
3) Closed Source
When vendors insist on closed source and do not provide fitting 64bit packages, you are in trouble. Whatever you do to get such running on a 64bit system is additional work, additional risk for your system's stability, and also never really working perfectly. Some of those (e.g. Google Earth) might run using the ia32-libs (pre-installed in sidux), some static 32bit non-Debian packages might work with limitations (e.g. Skype), some might need a 32bit chroot or a 32bit sidux install in a virtual machine.
Just let me add a personal experience here: The 32bit Debian packages those vendors provide are also far from perfect, often Debian Etch based, or - even worse - crappy $buntu .debs. Better avoid those vendors completely, and get used to Open source alternatives.
Greetings,
Chris |

You are right, same work goes for 32 bit. You just have to add later. I use 64 bit . With Flash.
I think that shockwave player does not install. |
