Has probably nothing to do whit this problem but I also have problems to get my scanner working after a reboot lately , it seems like a IRQ problem or something I think. |

| Possibly try "noapic" as a cheatcode and then as root run rcconf and make sure cups is checked |

temporary solution, (for testing if it works)
1) write desired cheatcode ( noapic ) at the grub menu screen. (it will be added to the boot option line)
or, permanent solution
2) edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file as root these lines for menu is near the end |

still , cups not coming up after reboot. (only /usr/sbin/cupsd brings it up)
found another cups related message in /var/log/messages :
Jul 13 12:23:21 jacksbox1 cupsd[3726]: *** WARNING *** The program 'cupsd' uses the Apple Bonjour compatibility layer of Avahi.
Jul 13 12:23:21 jacksbox1 cupsd[3726]: *** WARNING *** Please fix your application to use the native API of Avahi!
Jul 13 12:23:21 jacksbox1 cupsd[3726]: *** WARNING *** For more information see <http://0pointer.de/avahi-compat?s=libdns_sd&e=cupsd>
looked at site and googled for solution but can only remove message not cause. |

Smxi du-ed yesterday. Booted today and printer wouldn't print and
merely ejected a blank page.
Purged the whole cups system but no improvement.
During the re-installation I noted that cupsys-driver-gutenprint was
missing or obsolete (true as cupsys is now just cups). It suggested
using cups-driver-gutenprint.
Did that but still no improvement.
Eventually discovered that only the simplified gutenprint driver would produce a printed page. |

Hi
since the OP has shown "solved" I would like to add one more regarding locale affecting hplip toolbox.....I never had an issue with cups only with hp-setup not working....missing a ppd file and then checking /var/log/cups/error.log to discover it was my locale error.
I made an error in my locale selection and the solution is posted here.
