today I made a d-u with smxi and the hpijs packages were updated.
After rebooting the hplip-tool Icon was activated at the Taskpanel.
Klicking the Icon brought the message "no printers found".
No setup for my printers was successful. I am using a HP PSC 2410 (USB) and a HP Lserjet 2200 (Network/IP) the Printers are still printing well. Starting CUPS (in iceweasel) the mainpage is starting, but no choosen point (printers, spooler etc.) are working. There isn't opening a window to fill in the root password to set up some settings, too.
HPLIP-Tools is telling, that no PPD file can be found. The PPD-Files are stored in /usr/share/ppd/hpijs/HP/.
what can I do ? |

There was a version mismatch a few weeks ago; after the appropriate files were updated my P2015D printer wouldn't work - I reinstalled the printer but could only get it to work with the postscript (recommended) driver.

@hubi:
Maybe, this could be the failure.
Before I made the d-u yesterday, all worked fine. The hp-stuff was set on hold until yesterday.
Unfortunately running the command "yourbox:~# LANG=C.iso8859.1 hp-setup" in a terminal doesn't work. The message, I get is:
Code:

Have you tried adding a 'new' printer from localhost:631?

@drb
First, I noticed the new Icon in my Taskbar (xfce4), which was from the HP Tools.
So I clicked the Icon to look what it is for. I saw that this is a tool to manage my printers and while starting the tool, I got the message ""no printers found". I knew, that I had configured my printers (a HP PSC2410 plugged with USB and a HP Laserjet 2200 Networkprinter connected by IP-Adress) well (using CUPS in iceweasell, days before) and wondered, why they could not be found by the HP Tool. I choosed the dialog to configure (in this case to add them as "new", in my mind to "re-add") them and therewhile the message appeared "no PPD file found". I looked for the PPD Files and saw, the files are stored well in /usr/share/ppd/hpijs/HP/. The priners itself were detected automaticly by the HP Tool, but when I choosed the detected Printer, the message appeared that the PPD file for the choosen printer was not found.
The Day before doing the d-u (with the smxi script in runlevel 3) the hp-stuff was notified in hold-status by the script. During the last d-u (see my post above) the message does not appear and the hp-stuff was updated. As I could see, CUPS was not updated by the script.
The next step I did, was trying to look at my (well known installed) printers in CUPS itself, by starting CUPS in iceweasel. CUPS started the mainpage (in German) but no click on any button inside CUPS was successful. It seemed that the browser would hang while loading the choosen site. At the moment there is no way to addd a printer or to look at the configured printers or their spoolers by using CUPS neither in iceweasel nor in konqueror, so I think the problem will caused on the collaboration between CUPS and the HPTools. Maybe there will be a way to downgrade the HP-Tools. It would be worth to try it. I think, the tools and CUPS will work together, again.
hubis Link above (to the bug report list) seems to describe that problem. At this time, I don't know the version of the installed HPlibTools with smxi. (When I am at home again, I will look for. Running the hp-setup command in a console is not successful, see the printout at my last post. So there is no way to get any errorcodes...
By the way: my printers are printing well with the default driver settings. What I have to do is, trying to change some settings at the printing dialog, for example, when I want to print a textfile or a photo. It would be interesting, if the settings can be changed inside the printing dialog without an errormessage.
If you know, please show me the way how to downgrade the HP Tools to the last version before doing the d-u.
Sorry for my mistakes in writing, I am a German.... But I hope you (and all others) can understand me.... |

I'm simlar to you in that initially the HP Tools said 'no printer' but I can then select the printer from the third tab and make adjustments; with the recent update HP tools finds the printer but I can't print using the hplip driver, I need to select the postscript driver. I don't get any 'no-ppd' error messages.

As for the error:
Quote:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
hp-setup: cannot connect to X server :0.0
I think you need to use 'sux' in a X windows console to become root. |

@muchan:
that's right, but typing "sux hp-setup" encoured only the message like "hp-settup unknown session id" (at this time, I am not at home, so I only can write it out of my mind....) |

now I have to ask again:
is it possible to re-install (downgrade)the hp-stuff (hpliptools,hpijs)to the older version (before I did the d-u) ?
Meanwhile I have no printer to print and it is impossible to add one.
CUPS is hanging at iceweasel, if I choose a different point but "readme".... No way to get the spooler, setup or other cups sites in the browser. |

Hi Malemi,
I'm a bit confused; you said earlier your printers were working well but you couldn't change some settings but the latest post suggest they are not working at all.
I'd try uninstalling cups and hplip and start again - piper has given the code to do this in a thread he answered yesterday re KDE printing. As I said, the hplip drivers don't work for me any more and I have to select the postscript option.

Hi drb,
I am sorry, that was not my intention.
I think, I was fooled, because I could print with my network printer.
Meanwhile I tried to install cups 1.4 (loaded from the cups website) , but there were problems with the libraries and the cups server did not start, so I had to re-install cups 1.3.7 (there were a message at boot, about problems with shared libraries, I do not know the correct text anymore)
The HPLIP Tools are working itself but not together with cups 1.3.7. (not at my computer), so I can start the tools, but not configure or add any printer. I have re-installed the HP-Tools, hplip and hpijs and cups, but there are only the newest versions available, when I am using the "apt-get" command.
I know (well), that the hptools were working together with cups before I did the last d-u, so I wish to install the older version of hplip-tools and hpijs, but I do not know, how to manage this.
To uninstall and install something is possible for me, to delete the packages on my harddisk, too, but I do not know the hint, how to install an older version of a package (or how to get the older package, to install it, would be the same way, as to install any other package, I think....)

I'd try :
modprobe lp
echo lp >> /etc/modules
apt-get remove --purge cupsys hplip hpijs hpijs-data hplip-data hplip-gui hplip-doc cupsys-driver-gutenprint
apt-get install cupsys cupsys-driver-gutenprint testing/hplip testing/hpijs testing/hpijs-data testing/hplip-data testing/hplip-gui testing/hplip-doc
then configure printer in webbrowser : http://localhost:631/ |

Hi drb,
thank you very much for showing that way to re-install.
I am sorry to tell, that it doesn't work.
When I type the apt-get install line, I get the message, that the "testing" package can't be found.
Typink the same line without "testing", works and is installing the packages.
But the issues are the same. CUPS is starting and there is no way to choose any but the "help" site. The other sites are "hanging".
I think it will be the best way to get the older packages from hplip and hpijs and install them, then all will work well again.
Can you tell me, where I can get the older packages ?
edit:
OK, I know, why that way did not work. I had to fill in the testing sources into the sources.list.... |
