Post subject: automatic installing nvidia/ati driver after kernel upgrade  PostPosted: Jun 04, 2008 - 02:57 AM

shouldn't it be possible to automatic run sgfxi -K <new kernel> from the smxi script, after a new kernel install, to build the graphic card module?
That way the reboot would bring you back to the gui instead of running sgfxi first.

It is automatic, you must have missed it.

Steps:
install new kernel, do NOT exit smxi, do the dist-upgrade (or install kernel post dist-upgrade if you prefer)
Once the kernel install is done, as it says fairly clearly, you can continue to install graphics driver.
This choice sets a global new kernel value that is then sent to sgfxi via smxi graphics installer automatically.
when done with all things, proceed to graphics driver install, and install your graphics driver, it will automatically install to new kernel, before you reboot.

You can always tell if the sgfxi thing went to current kernel or new kernel, because if it's current, it asks if you want to start x, and if it's to a new kernel, it asks you if you want to reboot.

This was done a month or so ago, thanks to the great debugging work and sgfxi logic of op4latino.

Of course, sidux 2.6.25 kernels don't work with current fglrx, so keep that in mind, though debian sid kernels do. Which graphics card do you use?

thanks h2 for your fast reply ...
i didn't know you changed that already. i always installed the new kernel, did my dist-upgrade and after smxi was finished i started sgfx -K <new kernel> before i rebooted.
sorry my fault to not check the the graphic installer option.
nice work h2

fglrx works with new sidux kernel as of 2.6.25.5... it should at least - haven't tested it.
