My Intel 4965 wifi is working fine with the 2.6.24 kernels. Upgrading to 2.6.25 (all versions, including the latest -3 version) causes the 4965 adapter to stop working. Hardware is recognized and it can even scan and find the network, but fails on authentication, even if I have the access point open. I also tried with WEP and WPA with no success.

Unlike on the latest 2.6.24 kernel, IWCONFIG does not show any signal level.

lsmod shows the same wifi modules are loaded as in 2.6.24, including the 4965 driver.

Other than the lack of signal level in IWCONFIG, the only other differences I can see are in DMESG:

Using a 2.6.24 kernel:
wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0
wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:13:10:c4:a5:e6
wlan0: RX authentication from 00:13:10:c4:a5:e6 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0)

Any suggestions on what to try next would be appreciated. I haven't tried NDISWRAPPER and the Windows drivers, but that's the only other option I see. It looks like the linux firmware for the 4965 hasn't changed since last November.

Thanks!.

Servus!

I have installed my 4965 as described in the manual -> http://manual.sidux.com/en/hw-dev-hw-dri-en.htm

Installation way done with kernel 2.6.24. This weekend I updated to 2.6.25-3 and had NO problems. Anything worked just as before.

Thanks for the positive feedback, unfortunately not all wireless chipsets are available for testing/ debugging - and ipw3945/ ipw4965 only being available as Mini-PCIe makes it pretty much impossible to purchase it at a reasonable price.

I'll try removing the 2.6.25 kernel and doing a fresh install with a new firmware install. I did not do a firmware upgrade as it was working in 2.6.24 and I didn't see any new firmware on the intellinuxwireless web site.

Now that I know someone has gotten it to work I'll keep trying and will report back on whether the firmware reinstall worked.

After removing and reinstalling the firmware-iwlwifi firmware package and the 2.6.25-3 kernel I'm sorry to say the problem remains. Fortunately, these changes did not break the 2.6.24 kernel, where the 4965 wifi is working fine I'm using it to send this message.

Since the problem existed with the 25-1 and 25-3 kernels, I'm not hopeful the next version will fix it.

My next plan is to try a compiling a new 2.6.25-3 kernel customised for my T61 laptop and see if that works. I probably won't have a chance to try that until the weekend, however.

Doing a Google search on some of the DMESG strings I saw some people had been able to connect after doing an "iwlist scan". I tried that and while the access point was recognized, attempting to connect using the ceni script still failed on authentication.

If anyone has any easier alternatives to compiling and tweaking a new kernel, please let me know and I'll give them a try.

Thanks!

Perhaps 2 things about my configuration:

1. I don't use Draft-N, I'm running in 11g mode
2. I never used Ceni. Up to now all my config was done with netcardconfig, wich has now gone from the sidux-repos as far as I know.

But I don't think these hints help...

I installed the 2.6.25-4.slh.2 kernel with the same results as other kernels - the 4965 WLAN card in my Thinkpad T61 still would not connect, although the same configuration works fine in 2.6.24-2.6.24.5.slh-2 kernel.

To see if the problem might be the kernel modules, I downloaded the compat-wireless-2008-05-17 drivers from www.linuxwireless.org. That version wouldn't compile but compat-wireless-2008-05-07 compiled and installed with no problems. Interestingly enough, the result was the same as with the original kernel modules.

Researching this problem on the web, it looks like there are intermittent problems with the 3965 and 4965 in several linux distributions even with earlier kernels and even using ndiswrapper, so perhaps I'm lucky everything works fine in 2.6.24.

Next steps are to compile a custom kernel, attempting to match the 2.6.24 wireless/cryptographic settings as close as possible, and trying earlier version of the compat-wireless modules. As a last resort, I'll try ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers.

I'm encouraged to at least a few people have 4965 working with kernel 2.6.25. Has anyone had any success on the Lenovo Thinkpad T61 or R61 computers?

Yes, me.
Since two days I'm the proud owner of an Lenovo Thinkpad R61. I've installed sidux-nyx and so far everything works fine. Wireless (ipw4965) starts up at boot. Graphics (nVidia Quadro NVS 140M) was immediately recognized. I've now installed the nVidia beta driver 173.08 using h2's sgfxi script. Again, no problem. I didn't check the Fn-Keys, so may be there is a little tweaking to be done.

Btw, I left my sidux liveCD at the retailers, because the owner of that shop was really impressed when sidux fired up immediately on a "Windows-box".

Gruß oduffo

Edit: I forgot. After installing I did a d-u and upgraded to 2.6.25-4.slh.2-sidux-686 .

I'm typing this now on-line, using the 4965 WiFi connection and the 2.6.25.4 kernel. However, the way I got it working isn't pretty.

I tried compiling a new kernel the sidux way and seemed to get stuck at line 4972 (varied a bit from try to try) when doing a make menuconfig. After letting it run for a few hours I gave up and downloaded 2.6.25.4 from kernel.org and compiled it using make-kpkg after doing a make menuconfig based on the sidux 2.6.25.4 .config file using the kernel.org makefile, installing it with dpkg and then using update-initramfs to generate the initrd image.

Here is the diff output from the two .config files:

3,4c3,4
< # Linux kernel version: 2.6.25
< # Thu May 15 22:27:39 2008
---
> # Linux kernel version: 2.6.25.4
> # Sun May 18 21:35:25 2008
325d324
< CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_INITRD=y
966c965
< # CONFIG_MAC80211_RC_SIMPLE is not set
---
> CONFIG_MAC80211_RC_SIMPLE=m
1648d1646
< CONFIG_USB_ATMEL=m
1663c1661
< CONFIG_IWL4965_HT=y
---
> # CONFIG_IWL4965_HT is not set
2078,2093d2075

The two settings I changed were:
CONFIG_MAC80211_RC_SIMPLE=
from N
to M

and

CONFIG_IWL4965_HT
from Y
to "Not set"

CONFIG_MAC80211_RC_SIMPLE was set on the sidux 2.6.24 kernel that was working but not on the 2.6.25 kernels. My 4965 card as received doesn't support 802.11preN and I believe removing CONFIG_IWL4965_HT stopped it from trying.

That seems to be the fix, at least for my U.S. Thinkpad T61.

I haven't had a chance to check suspend but it was working on the sidux 2.6.24 kernels and I hope it works here.

When I get some more time I'll see if I can track down why "make menuconfig" didn't work with the sidux source.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and letting me know it was possible to get the 4965 card running under 2.6.25!

Thanks oduffo

I think the difference is I installed the AMD64 version of sidux and it looks like you used the 32 bit version. I was considering doing a new 32 bit install if I couldn't get the 4965 to work, but it the only major issue I'd encountered using the 64 bit sidux. WINE works fine.

I appreciate the comments. I'm still using the NVIDIA 169.12 driver installed using smxi but will give the new driver a try.

I've done some more testing and determined one kernel setting was causing the Intel 4965AG in my Thinkpad T61 not to associate with my 802.11g router:

CONFIG_IWL4965_HT

is set to "Y" in the sidux 2.6.25 kernels. Compiling a new kernel with this option not set ("N" in the menuconfig or xconfig settings) allows my 4965AG PCI card to connect. Intel 4965AGN cards, which do not have the IEEE 802.11-pre-N option disabled, will probably work fine with the default configuration. I'm not sure if they will work with CONFIG_IWL4965_HT not set, but if they do it I'd recommend changing the sidux config file to not set this option to allow the kernel to work with both 4965AG and 4965AGN cards.

By the way, I was able to recompile my 2.6.25-4 kernel using the sidux Makefile and sidux source by following the excellent instructions from ralul in the posting http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-10533.html - Hint for building kernel in five steps. In my previous failed attempt it's now obvious I shouldn't have tried to do a "make menuconfig" using the sidux makefile but instead done the configuration in the copy of the linux source file directory.

Servus Doug!

I have the 4965AGN with the pre-N ability. So if your kernel is a 32-Bit-kernel, I could do some testing with it. I'm sorry, I don't have a 64-Bit system yet.
So if your kernel fits my system, send me a PM, I will test it and then perhaps slh can change the default-kernel.

Thanks GblubbR -

Unfortunately I'm using the AMD64 kernel, although given all the hassles I've had with Java and multimedia plugins with AMD64 I'm seriously considering reinstalling sidux as a 32-bit system. After having trouble with some plugins I compiled at 64 bit version of Firefox 3.0RC1 but now I only have limited Java support using Icedtea as Sun hasn't released a plugin and web start for AMD64.
