| I am using a NVIDIA GT8500GT card but I am not having much success in installing the NVIDIA driver(NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.12-pkg2.run). I have also tried using the nv driver with no better result and the resolution and acceleration remains at the medocre level Has anyone managed to solve this problem? Other distros do not seem to have this . |

Maybe you might want to try the actual beta-Driver from Nvidia which should run better with newer kernels
you can get it via sgfxi -co 173.08
I am running it here wit 6600GT Cards, no problems.

Hi Piper & Reiner,
I have tried both of the suggested solutions but I am still unable to set the resolution. In fact both end with a 640x480 resolution.
The conclusion is that, unfortunately, it is the Distro since both PCLINUXOS Gnome and VectorLinux 5.8 work OK. |

A few month ago much sidux users have had the problem with only unchangeably resolution 640 x 480 myself too.
But it was solved - I forgot how.
Maybe a copy from xorg.conf and backup can help.
Running the livedvd copy within konqueror as sysmtemmaster the xorg.conf to the right folder of sidux - rights should be changed before to writeable
then reboot and run under init 3 sgfxi -c
again directly
I use this when I change graphic-cards in sidux. |

After you run the driver installation script:
Code:
sgfxi -co 173.08
then you need to open a root shell and use the Nvidia xconfig utility to configure the xorg.conf file:
Code:
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
finally you run the Nvidia settings utility as root one time:
Code:
nvidia-settings
and use that to set the screen resolution, then use the "Save to X Configuration File" button to overwrite the xorg.conf file.
Restart the X server (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) and log in again and you should see the resolution that you set. |

dibl,
I have tried your suggestion and the first two worked but on re-starting the x-sever it reverted to640x480 and nvidia-settings did not allow any changes.
Previous versions were not so reluctant to change. Perhaps the next version due sometime this month may rectify this problem.
For me it is spoiling an otherwise excellent OS. |

That's odd, and frustrating, I'm sure.
Try this: after you run the first two commands that I gave, restart the X server and log in. Then try Alt-F2 "kdesu nvidia-settings" with no quote marks, and see if it will cooperate that way. |

The monitor is a BenQ FP767 and I have noticed that the resolution is set to 1024x768@60Hz. Is there any way of changing this prior to upgrading the graphics card driver? |

I don't think so -- some driver must be working first (even if it is "nv"), then use the driver to adjust screen resolution and refresh second. |

Configure xorg.conf (as root) in this section (use the resolution you want/need)
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 0"
Monitor "Monitor 0"
DefaultColorDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1600x1200" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1600x1200" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1600x1200" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1600x1200" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
then restart x |

Thanks for your suggestion, piper.
I am a newcomer to delving into the workings and I am not sure how to edit the file.
Which editor do you recommend and when you say (root) is this by means of a root terminal? |

"root" ist the Systemadministrator-Account in Linux. "root" can do (almost) everything in/on your System.
By seprerating the Accounts in "user" and "sysadmin(root)" you get an highly safe System.
One of the reason Windowsuser can get viruses, etc. on their Systems is, that they normally log in with administrator rights, where a virus can do harm to the System.
In a $NIX environment only "root" can change/edit/configure systemfiles, thats why you have to open a file like the /etc/X11/xorg.conf as "root" (kdesu <command> in KDE, su or sux <command> - followed by the root-password - in Console)
A possible Editor for example is kate for graphical use or vi for Console (but you should read a bit about vi before using it!).
For you that could be:
Code:
kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
using <Alt+F2> in KDE
or
Code:
su
*your_root_password*
Code:
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
or
- switch to a "real" Console by <Ctrl+Alt+F1>
- log in as root
- vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf |

From a terminal or tty or any cli environment, the nano editor would be easy to use for someone not familiar with vi. You can learn enough to do simple edits with vi, but it will be ... different. Nano would be invoked thus from a root shell
# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Be sure your monitor can support whatever resolution you choose. If you use something it can't support you will get garbage and/or toast your monitor. If your monitor only supports a maximum of 1024x768@60Hz, trying a higher resolution may be a real bad idea.
You may have to install nano first, in that case
# apt-get install nano
will do just that. Good luck. |

| Being a newer user the easiest way to do this would be to go to
Code:
/etc/X11
and then right click on the
Code:
xorg.conf
file, then choose
Code:
actions > edit as root
If your using the "lite" version you might not have that option (edit as root) so do this:
Create a file, say konq_root.desktop and put it here:
Code:
/home/username/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus
Inside that file copy & paste this:
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
ServiceTypes=inode/directory
Actions=open_as_root
[Desktop Action open_as_root]
Name=Open as Root
Icon=konsole
Exec=kdesu konqueror %F
Now, if you right click any directory in Konqueror and go to Actions, a new menu appears, Open as Root. If you select more than one directory, Konqueror will open each of them in a new tab. |
