I've had this problem for years through different nvidia cards, linux distros, X versions, driver versions, now still the same in sidux with nvidia version 1.0-9631 and xorg 1:7.1.0-9. It happens when I use TV-out with Twinview (clone mode), VGA consoles (Ctrl-Alt-Fn) are completely unusable, currently displaying scrambled green blocks. I've worked around this in the past using vga=normal or vga=775 (dropping to 256 colors) on the kernel line, but then I don't have any nice splashy graphics or they're messed up.
In the Nvidia README.txt in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx, Nvidia talks about the int10 module in connection with this issue. It says to make sure the driver can use this module and also states elsewhere that "the NVIDIA X driver may not restore the console correctly with XFree86 versions older than 4.3 when the console is a TV". But I have the int10 module and /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that it loads OK:
(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libint10.so
(II) Module int10: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.1.1, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) NVIDIA(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
Does anybody know of any other fixes or workarounds? I only use my TV for watching movies from the computer (e.g in Kaffeine) and playing video games, not for actually working in sidux, text is not very readable on it. It's tough to lose my VGA consoles every time I turn on Nvidia TwinView.
Thanks. sidux rules! |

| Actually, to clarify, I only have this problem when the TV is plugged into the card (a Leadtek 6600GT), when TwinView is enabled. To get the VGA consoles back, all I have to do is unplug the TV and reboot, but it's still unpleasant to be without VGA consoles while using the TV. I wonder if using different X screens instead of TwinView might get around this problem? |
