In Kanotix the text editor nano wasn't in the cd because there was mcedit.
What about shipping nano with sidux, instead of mcedit? Cool
I find nano clearer and more unix-compliant, mcedit sometimes seemed to use the dos endline format.

dedo: I agree, I definitely prefer nano as well. To me mcedit has a really outdated interface, although functionally the two are quite similar on the surface. If the endline format issue is a real one that should be enough cause to switch from mcedit default to nano default.

By the way, I was happy to find that etch is using nano as default non expert useable console editor, along with vi/vim. Also, a quick look at nano's --help option list shows it's got quite a few more features. We'll see what happens, I definitely second your suggestion.

<update>I also took a quick look at some nano options which I hadn't seen before, including a priceless -i, which auto indents, that's important for any real script, as well as +<line number> to start at the line of a script. I don't know if mcedit has these options, but nano does, and is compatible with native debian installs, which to me is another good argument in terms of consistency between sidux and debian.

I second that, h2. Nano's nice to have in the distro and Joe is another fine easy to use editor as well. Vi/Vim are still the standby's for the UNIX junkies Wink

I also second nano.

I particularly like the keyboard shortcuts at the bottom.
Saves having to remember what's what especially when
in a panic.

Boys, vim is so much smoother Mr. Green. It has that beautiful colored text which makes files easier to read, you can paste text with the middle mouse button, you can delete whole lines simply by pressing dd - you just have to get used to pressing "i" before editing and <esc>:wq for saving and quitting. Editor wars - yeah Mr. Green
