smxi is allowing gimp to update without gimp-data (shouldn't there be a version mis-match check in smxi?). I'm not risking it but putting gimp / gimp-data on hold manually.

there is a version mismatch check, but it has two levels, the full, including debian maintainer sub version, and the standard, not including debian maintainer sub version.

I currently am using as default for all hold/install tests the standard until I receive a report that the sub version number test is required.

There does not appear to be any problem with gimp at this point, I just did a trial of it. gimp-data does not appear to be a dependency for this update, because it's a subversion only update.

Your concern is apparently unwarranted.

So then its possible that Gimp had a minor update that did not affect its deps at all. So if the update to a package is minor, then it should not always break the deps...correct?

correct, we determine this on a package group by package group basis, I start all groups out as using only primary package version, then only if it proves the dependencies are too restrictive, and require debian maintainer sub version as well, do I move them into the full version number testing.

This case is actually a good example of why I prefer to do it this way, gimp would get hold with full testing, and doesn't need to be held, whereas it now gets updated fine.

Thanks for the reassurance! This must be a first for a minor gimp update! I'm relying on it for 300 wedding photos at the moment . . . .
