Thanks to everybody for your help.
Sorry,I run any any 116, 115a and 115. I unistalled vmware, deleted all vmvare directories and files I found on the system, the error still remain.
Furthermore, I went back to previous kernel (2.6.23.14), where vmware worked ok, and found that now it does not work anymore: same error message.
So I suppose there must be somewhere some faulty installation file left, that makes the application fail.
Thanks |

oh, it reappeared?
I don't trust that one, it didn't appear via official channels, but thanks for the link anyway, I'll note it. |

Both Workstation 6.01 and Player 2.01 are working fine for me on my two desktop machines with the current (2.6.24.2-11) kernel and the any-any-115a patch. Just make sure you are using the 115a patch, not 115.
My laptop is running the 2.6.23.16 kernel (can't use 2.6.24 on it yet due to a WiFi driver issue), and Player doesn't need any patch at all there. |

I can install vmware-workstation 6.0.3 build-80004 with different kernel 2.6.23... but I cannot install vmware with no kernel 2.6.24.....
I have the same problem with v**multimedia**. Why ?
uname -r : 2.6.24-2.6.24.4.slh.5-sidux-686.

for player, try svmi, it will download and run the correct any any patch.
I don't use workstation or server, so I can't say on those, but vmware player is working fine on 2.6.24.4. |

hello
Thank you.
you are right, v**multimedia** is OK with svmi and the kernel 2.6.24.4.
But, same with the patch vmware-any-any-update115,Vmware Workstation 6.0 and + ..., do not install with the kernel 2.6.24.
I' use for the moment the kernel 2.6.23.. to create the virtual image. |

you have to use any-any-115a, not 115, but I can't say a word about non svmi stuff, and I don't use workstation, so I can't say.
I only put what I can support and test myself into svmi, which is why it usually works. |

A solution:
My "uname -r" is : 2.6.24-2.6.24.5.slh.1-sidux-686
1- Install VMware® Workstation - 6.0.3 build-80004 and crash.
2- wget http://taltan2.free.fr/dl/vmware/vmware ... te-116.tgz
3- tar xvf vmware-any-any-update-116.tgz -
4- cd vmware-any-any-update-116
5- ./runme.pl
6- OK |

ah, good, that's what I was hoping for...
tested and works now svmi: 0.9.27
vmware player 2.02 + 2.6.25 kernel support working.
I believe you'll need to reinstall the player, but it will just use the original download you had so that won't take long, then choose 'n' to configure, and svmi will download and run any any 117. |

Thanks a ton, green. I've been fighting with this for 10 days or so (trying to get WS 6.0.3 to compile its modules and then run on kernel 2.6.25). Now I'm a happy duck again. I took the liberty of posting a reference to your post in the VMware Workstation forum here. I hope you don't mind. It think it will help a good many other users.
Thanks again. |
