When I try to print a test page from KDE Control Module
Quote:
cupsdoprint -P 'E240_lexmark' -J 'KDE Print Test' -H '/var/run/cups/cups.sock:631' -U 'root' -o ' multiple-document-handling=separate-documents-uncollated-copies orientation-requested=3' '/usr/share/apps/kdeprint/testprint.ps' : execution failed with message:
client-error-not-authorized
and from the web interface I got
Quote:
E [02/May/2009:16:29:22 +0300] cupsdAuthorize: pam_authenticate() returned 7 (Authentication failure)!
E [02/May/2009:16:29:51 +0300] cupsdAuthorize: pam_authenticate() returned 7 (Authentication failure)!
E [02/May/2009:16:30:09 +0300] Pause-Printer: Unauthorized
E [02/May/2009:16:30:18 +0300] Pause-Printer: Unauthorized
E [02/May/2009:16:30:27 +0300] Resume-Printer: Unauthorized
E [02/May/2009:16:30:33 +0300] Resume-Printer: Unauthorized
Then I did lppasswd -a username and I used the same password as the root but no solution.
Finally, I start reading about bugs:
cups fails to print on polled printers with client-error-not-authorized
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=520396
cups dies upon printing *any* document
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=524201
upgrade from lenny to squeeze - cups doesn't print because rastertogutenprint.5.2 is missing
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=522428
I think those bugs should affect a lot of people.
Is it possible to print somehow?
Regards

Printing works fine here. I just d-u'd yesterday (AFAIK it was working before that)...
edit: just remembered that I have had recurring password issues in the CUPS web interface itself, that usually disappear after a reboot. However this does not appear to affect normal printing from applications. |

That works...if you add a security exception to it in iceweasel |

I used http. I tried https too with same results.
Eventually, I purged cups and re-installed it.
Now I can login in the cups interface using my user ID and password.
DeepDayze thanks for the https tip. Its not necessary but it safer. |

It has always been recommended to use http://localhost:631/ for setting up printers. |

Please explain why to access your own localhost via https is "safer" than via http. (??)

By the way, the Lexmark E240 does support PCL6 and therfore works directly out of the box with sidux, simply select the PCL6 driver at http://localhost:631
Do not install any "drivers" directly from Lexmark!

I tried in the past the lexmark drivers and it was a total failure. Never again.
I use a driver from OpenPrinting database which essentially is the same with one you propose.
I had a look in manual. In http://manual.sidux.com/en/sys-admin-gen-en.htm#cups described exactly what I did to solve the problem. Therefor, as a general rule in case of any problem the first thing is to read the manual. It could save 3 or more hours of searching for a solution |

| Set up: two uptodate sidux machines on the same LAN. one desktop (named senf) with usb printer, which is published and shared. desktop prints just fine to the printer. The laptop can see the shared printer when looking at localhost:631, but the laptop can no longer send jobs to the shared printer, as it did prior to dist-upgrade. Cups error_log on the desktop shows no errors. Cups error_log on the notebook says:
Code:
E [17/May/2009:22:30:06 -0500] PID 4473 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp) stopped with status 4!
E [17/May/2009:22:30:06 -0500] [Job 48] Unable to locate printer 'Senf.local'!
E [17/May/2009:22:30:06 -0500] PID 4474 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp) stopped with status 4!
E [17/May/2009:22:30:06 -0500] [Job 48] Unable to locate printer 'Senf.local'!
Seems like a bit of a contradiction. Any ideas?
Edit:
Ok- so the share functionality quit working like it used to- i.e. click share tab on cups web interface and then be able to print to the printer. However when I check the box on the web interface to allow printing from internet and add the printer to the laptop as http://192.168.1.102:631/printers/Monochrome_Samsung it works. |
