Post subject: Converting 32bit to 64bit
Greetings,

I hope I didnt miss an already existant thread on this:
Is it possible to easily convert a 32bit sidux to a 64bit one?

Perhaps just install a 64bit kernel, plus d-u'ing with only 64bit repos enabled?

If so, I would assume all the 32bit packages would still remain, having it a tremendous use (not to say waste) of diskspace?

Is there an overview anywhere where I can find applications for 64bit?
Like OOo, flashplayer, IW3, Amarok, Kaffeine, Beagle, Wine..

Thanks!

Greetings and welcome!

As towo| says, it is not an "update" -- you must install 64-bit sidux new.

However, there is no problem of "finding" applications. All the applications (well, 99.9%) that are compiled for 32-bit are also compiled for 64-bit, and are in the repos. There is no difference in the "look and feel" of selecting packages for the 64-bit architecture -- it is exactly the same. If you go outside the repos for downloaded applications, you might find one that only exists for 32-bit, and then it won't install but will give a "wrong architecture" error. Firefox 3 with flashplugin-nonfree and the mozilla-notallowedtosayitplugin works just fine for all the sites I visit include youtube and the news videos. Smile

No freezes anymore with Iceweasel + Flash if you are watching more than 2 or 3 videos? I often see a crash of "npviewer.bin" here with sidux/64.

You need to save your data (/home and other places where you stored data) and install completely new.
I have done it with most of our Family-PCs and most apps are working in 64-Bit now, some (which are only available in 32-Bit) however run in an "emulation"-mode usng the ia32-libs.

schmidtreiner,
you mean I could use my customization stored in my home-folder for I wouldnt have to start from scratch when installing 64bit? Hm, still though I would have to find all the packages installed since my first install of sidux eros (which would be quite some)..
And that "emulation"-mode, you dont refer to chroot but sort of some automatically used 'hidden' emulation?

Thanks for your replies so far, appreciated!

No, ia32libs takes care of the 32-bit emulation with no user interaction -- it is transparent to the user.

I have occasionally noticed npviewer sucking CPU resources, even after Iceweasel is closed. I have not noticed it crash. I have a lot of CPU horsepower so it doesn't cause a problem, but other folks have chosen Opera or another browser to avoid such things.

Yes, you are going to lose your customizations when you do the new 64-bit installation. Sorry.

If your /home directory is on a separate partition, you can leave your data there and choose it on the installer so it is automatically set up. If /home is with the root filesystem, then you need to back your data up somewhere else before you install a new OS. Smile

yes, you can keep the customisations in /home. And the ia32 libs/emulation are installed as dibls wrote. Only on some rare occasions it might be necessary to put a link from a lib in the 32Bit area pointing to the normal libs.
