Post subject: Kernel 2.6.26
Now Kernel 2.6.26 has finally entered sidux officially, but there are a few changes to take care of.

- lirc has been split out to an external package, due to requirements for Debian lenny, its naming is still very unfortunate and will be changed in the future.
Code:
apt-get install lirc-modules-modules-2.6-sidux-686
# or
apt-get install lirc-modules-modules-2.6-sidux-amd64
(this will become "lirc-modules-2.6-sidux-*" soon)

- rt2500usb had to be disabled temporarily as it crashed kernel 2.6.26, this issue is being debugged (upstream and for sidux) - but given that rt2500usb didn't work properly with previous kernels, this hasn't been identified as a blocker
EDIT:solved and enabled again.

- 2.6.26 kernels still crash as guests in virtualbox, this issue is still under investigation.

Kernel 2.6.25 will be maintained for a little longer (pending grave issues for another 1-2 weeks), but the default and meta packages have been moved to 2.6.26.

Just tried 2.6.26-0.slh.5-sidux-686 on my 32bit ex-Kanotix system.

Seems to work fine with the 173.14.09 Nvidia driver (I'll try the
others later).

Previously, any combination of Nvidia driver and any 2.6.25 kernel
always caused X to crash (including the legacy drivers).

Hello,

does the new 2.6.26 sidux kernel work with fglrx driver too ?
Or ware we going to have the same GPL issue than with 2.6.25 sidux real time kernel ?

Thanks

Hello,
I cannot confirm that. My installation with the latest 2.6.25 kernel and 64 bit works fine with the latest Nvidia driver.
3D apps like blender or secondlife have a very good performance.

Post subject: Kernel 2.6.26 ist etwas zickig
Hallo,
auch bei mir "Driver 'pcspkr' is already registered, aborting... "

options saa7134 card=48 tuner=23 video_nr=0 vbi_nr=0 radio_nr=0
install saa7134 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install saa7134; /sbin/modprobe saa7134_alsa
options saa7134-alsa index=1

Just another positive feedback. Except for the error message "pcspkr ..." the new kernel is so far doing fine on my ThinkPad R61. No problem with Nvidia. The blinking WLAN-LED I take as a bonus.

Post subject: Kernel 2.6.26 with saa7134 is really kinky (?)
Hello,
as reported in my last post (in german unfortunately) I cannot acess the tuner of my saa7134-based card any more.
The tuner-module sticks to tuner-type 38 even if I selctect the corectly working tuner-module (23 in my case) manually or via the the options in /etv/modpobe.d/saa7134.
I have searched around and it looks that this is a known problem and it seems that there is a patch existing alreadyfor that
Please see:
http://fixunix.com/kernel/510082-re-patch-v4l-link-tuner-before-saa7134.html
Would it be possibble to include this patch or should I rather try to create my own kernel with it?
I also could stick with the 2.6.25-kernels fo a while until the problem has been overcome.

I am not too much used to compile kernels myself any more as with Kanotix and sidux slh's kernels didn't make it necessary, but I could try again Smile

i have had experienced problems with 2.6.26 and my T43 waking up from 'suspend-to-ram'...
if i leave it in suspend for few minutes, it wakes up and everything is fine
leaving it in suspend for a longer time (say over 15 minutes) breakes the graphics... i had to hard-reset the system once, another time i got it rebooted via ctrl + alt + enft or RSEIUB (one of these commands did it)

T43, ati x300, xorg ati driver (not the binary one), atheros wlan via ath5k driver

is there a place i can look for error logs, after rebooting when such a problem appeares again?

I can't connect to my access-point with kernel 2.6.26. It seems to be a problem with wpa-supplicant. I can see other access points but not my own. Ceni, wlassistant or kwlan can not connect. Kwlan posts that it can not start wpa supplicant.

With kernels 2.6.23, .24 and .25 all works fine. I downgraded back to 2.6.25.

Wlan-Chip is intel 4965

PS: It looks like the same problem with kernel 2.6.22 and 2.6.23-1 (?) See here.

I tried kernel 2.6.26-1.slh.3-sidux-amd64,
My saa7134-card is now recognised correctly again.
Only the TV-Sound is somehow weired now. I have to switch the Sound-card (NVidia CK804, onboard) into 2-channel mode (in kmix) if I want to hear/record tv- or radio-sound. All other sound-sources (PCM, CD) seem to work with 4-channel-mode as before. Also the balance seem not to work always correct but I have to look still more deeply into that.

Post subject:
dacorsa,

what information you have provided is inaccurate and insufficient. First of all, modprobe commands only occur _after_ compiling a kernel module; you did not include the output of compiling as stated. Secondly, the message tells you to investigate output of "dmesg", which would reveal the details of the symbol disagreement.

Please take more care when reporting problems, or else you waste alot of time and do not get expedient results.

Thanks, Kel.

Post subject: USB soundcard fails
I have a problem with my usb soundcard now which I use as a second soundcard for redirecting sound to my tv. This worked fine with kernel 2.6.25 and earlier but fails with kernel 2.6.26 (have tried 2.6.26-1.slh.4-sidux-686 and 2.6.26-1.slh.3-sidux-686). It seems to fail completely and its place is taken by the internal pc speaker (the thing on the motherboard that beeps).

The soundcard is recognized as (from lsusb)
Code:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0ccd:0028 TerraTec Electronic GmbH Aureon 5.1 MkII

I see the following in /var/log/messages which I think points out where it fails
Code:
Aug  7 22:31:27 semmentjern kernel: snd-usb-audio: probe of 2-1:1.0 failed with error -5
Aug  7 22:31:27 semmentjern kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio

I have googled this error without finding anything relevant.

/proc/asound/modules says:
Code:
 0 snd_cmipci
 1 snd_pcsp

With kernel 2.6.25 (and earlier) it said
Code:
 0 snd_cmipci
 1 snd_usb_audio

pcsp is as far as I know the internal pc speaker... No good for watching movies.

The following section from /etc/modprobe.d might also be relevant (last 10 lines or so):
Code:
# Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0
options bt87x index=-2
options cx88_alsa index=-2
options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2
# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2

options snd-cmipci index=0
options snd-usb-audio index=1

The last two lines here were added by me to make sure that my pci card is the primary sound card and the usb card is the secondary sound card. This has not been changed recently.

However, if I do the same thing in tty1, I get two extra lines on top that is not from /var/log/messages:
Code:

cannot find the slot for index 1 (range 0-1), error: -6
cannot create card instance 0

The same two lines are also displayed when booting if I have enabled the on-board sound chip (which is an internal usb device, CM6501 USB from C-Media "Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0d8c:0201 C-Media Electronics, Inc. CM6501"). So my problem is not specific to my particular usb sound card.

I also have the pcspkr 2.6.26 kernel bug. The CPU goes to 100% load & this appears to be the artsd & I have no sound from my Creative Audigy 4 sound card. Every so often the PC speaker gives a croak though! This bug is the same with both the Debian & sidux 2.6.26 Kernels.
All was well with the 2.6.25 kernels.
My trouble is, my system is a fresh Debian Testing netinstall with sidux repositories & the smxi script & the current kernels are only 2.6.26
As I know the 2.6.25 kernels work fine on my AMD64 system I have installed the last of the 2.6.25 sidux kernels (2.6.25-14.slh.2-sidux-amd64) through the kernel options in smxi.
So now I have sound, but, smxi fails to install the nvidia driver for my nvidia GT6600 because the kernel headers & dependencies are no longer available for 2.6.25!
Can anyone tell me where I will be able to find the headers etc for 2.6.25-14.slh.2-sidux-amd64?

Thanks,

straykat

I am still using Kernel 2.6.26-1.slh.3-sidux-686 because it is the last Kernel that works with my Creative Labs SB Audigy. I have no sound at all when using later Kernels.

Found a Ubuntu bug report about the snd-pcsp module loading up the pc speaker instead of the sound card in the 2.6.26 kernel.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/242966
I blacklisted snd-pcsp in etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.
I then was able to reboot into the 2.6.26 kernel with sound Smile
Hope this helps others with this problem.

Thank you straykat! It solved my problem too. Otherwise, the problem is still there in the latest kernel, 2.6.26-3.slh.4-sidux-686.

hi there,
any 2.6.26 kernel causes a black screen a few seconds after selecting from grub. Is this a known problem? 2.6.25.14 works great. My hardware:

AMD Athlon X2 TL58
ATI Radeon HD2600
2gb RAM
Atheros WLAN
Some ACPI Modules since this is a notebook.

Hope someone can help,
yours,
Bene

Did you reinstall the ATI graphics drivers after the new kernel install?

as far as I know I didn't.
I'm using the free radeonhd driver since the fgrlx stopped working with sidux kernels. I don't know if there is still an ability to reinstall radeonhd for the current kernel, so I'll try a little bit. If there is any other way to solve this problem I would be glad to hear that, I would like to use the most current kernel, too =).

I'm sorry for my lousy english,

Hi all,

I have noticed that while support for my AverMedia M115 hybrid TV/DVB card is included since 2.6.26, I can't get sound anymore. Previously, I used the latest experimental v4l and built it myself to get TV working including sound via sox as described here:
http://advhertz.altervista.org/install- ... mi/#Video2
In order to get sound, I did have to try different firmwares, though.

However, I would prefer not to use that method anymore since it breaks my webcam. With kernel 2.6.26, my card is correctly detected except for the DVB part (about which I don't care too much right now, see dmesg output at the end) but I don't get any sound. Seems like the firmware used in 2.6.26 doesn't quite match my card, but afaik there's no option to try different firmwares.

So my question is: if this justifies a bug report / feature request, where would I post that? Or does anybody have an idea what I could try to get my sound back?

thanks,

sharkcow
